These findings suggested that the test was a reliable and valid tool for assessing Chinese drivers’ hazard perception ability. The differences in response latencies between accident-free and accident-involved drivers indicated the test was highly useful for Chinese drivers. These results suggest that the hazard perception test using VR is reasonably useful for gathering the characteristics of novice and experienced drivers. Novice drivers responded to the hazards significantly slower than did experienced drivers, controlling for gender, age, and years of education. Drivers were asked to click the left mouse button quickly when they detected a potential hazard. Seventy-two video clips were shown to 41 experienced drivers and 57 novice drivers. Instinctively slowing down when approaching a group of children. Well-developed hazard perception skills allow persons engaged in activities such as driving to identify hazards in time to take appropriate preventative action. The present study aimed to develop a video-based hazard perception test and validate it in Chinese drivers. Hazard perception is a complex human cognitive skill which allows a person to identify a potentially hazardous situation. Hazard perception is the main component of driving skills and its deficiency is significantly associated with car accidents of considerable consequences (Horswill and McKenna, 2004). Due to the evidence supporting the notion that drivers’ hazard perception ability was associated with their accident involvement, many reaction time-based hazard perception tests were developed for driver training and licensing. Safe driving also entails quick and accurate responses to a variety of hazards in the driving environment.
